In 2001, a Song Helped the World Heal from Tragedy. 25 Years Later, It Still Does

In October 2001 – with a nation and the world still stunned and reeling from a tragedy like no other – singer-songwriter Alan Jackson woke up before the sun rose with a melody, a few lyrics, and a chorus in his head. He revisited them later that morning…by the end of the day had completed the song…and within two weeks, he somewhat reluctantly performed it live for the first time ever – in front of a national audience on the 35^th annual CMA Awards – having found the words to describe the full spectrum of emotions people had experienced since September 11 by asking “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning).”

A quarter-century later, the world will stop to answer that question once again. And again, Alan’s voice will help people remember and reflect.

MCA is releasing a new live recording of “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” – captured in June at the country music icon’s final concert in Nashville. The song will be available to stream and download at 12:00am ET Friday…and will be shared nationwide with radio, who have turned to Alan’s original versions of the song (included on his album, Drive) every year since the tragic events of September 2001.

“I was so nervous about putting it out,” he still recalls. “Even after we did, I thought we would perform it for a little while and then it would just go away. I didn’t feel like people would want to keep thinking about that. But ever since, I see people waiting on that song in the crowd…and I know I have to do it for them.”

The importance – and impact – of “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” was immediate…and lasting. So many radio stations lifted the song from the CMA Awards telecast the next day that it debuted on the country charts. The live performance and a studio-recorded version were added to Alan’s Drive album to give the public a means of owning the song (in a world before downloads and streams, and as a quicker means of doing so than releasing a physical single). The song was honored time and again at the CMA, ACM and Grammy Awards, where it was nominated as all-genre Song of the Year. Its words have been read into the Congressional Record, Alan was asked to sing it in New York City on the six-month anniversary of 9/11…during observances at The Pentagon on the one-year anniversary…and at the Kennedy Center for an official Washington, DC event attended by the president and members of Congress marking the 10^th anniversary in 2011.

“Doing ‘Where Were You’ for the first time was so emotional for me,” Jackson says, looking back at the 2001 CMA Awards and countless other performances since. “I was proud I did, though…and it’s one I feel like a lot of people want to hear,” he adds.

“Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning) - Live” was recorded in Nashville on June 27 as Jackson staged his career-capping Last Call: One More for the Road concert. The tiered seating of the city’s Nissan Stadium lit up with phones swaying in a display of respect as the Country Music Hall of Famer sang its words one last time from a concert stage. The concert will air in December as an NBC-TV special, Alan Jackson: The Last Show, and be showcased on the upcoming album, Alan Jackson: The Last Show One More for the Road – The Finale (Live from Nashville).
