Singer of simple songs wows Brisbane
Chris Hutton, AAP
March 13, 2011, 11:21 am

After six sell-out concerts in four venues across three states, country music legend Alan Jackson's first Australian tour has come to an end.

The "legend" in this case is well deserved.

Jackson has had 34 number one selling singles and sold more than 50 million albums, but his Australian fans have had to wait more than 20 years for him to come Down Under.

Was it worth the wait? Most definitely.

This was a tour which gave the fans a chance to hear Jackson singing those number one hits live and on stage.

Fans were on their feet even before the first moment he walked on stage and were ready to sing along within seconds of the opening bars of each song.

These were not music fans or country music lovers checking Jackson out on the off-chance it might be a good night.

They were the hard-core Jackson followers, singing along with every lyric, and lapping up his every word between songs.

"It's a beautiful country," he told the audience, "and everyone's been so nice to us down here and I'm glad to finally get the chance to come and play y'all some country music.

"We're just gonna play you a bunch of ol' songs about life and love, some fun songs, some drinking songs, some heartache songs, some good ol' sad songs, everything that makes up country music to me."

And that's what he did.

The fans danced and sang along to Little Bitty, Chattahoochee and Summertime Blues, with some of the biggest cheers for what appears to be their favourite drinking song, It's Five O'Clock Somewhere.

He reminded us of the importance of family with Remember When, Small Town Southern Man and Drive, dedicated to his late father for taking the time to give him experiences at the wheel that will never be forgotten.

And I felt especially privileged to hear him sing Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning), his song about the 9/11 terrorist attack on the US.

As he says in that song he is just a "singer of simple songs", but it is the simplicity of them that gives an added depth.

The concert was simple too.

Jackson did not need to be lowered from the ceiling and be surrounded by writhing dancers; there were not thousands of flashing lights and smoke machines; the only "high-tech" addition was videos on the big screen behind him with shots of the family and other scenes which helped illustrate his songs.

His last song before the encore, Where I Come From was backed on the big screen not by shots of his home town in Georgia, but by pictures of Brisbane, with the biggest cheer for the statue of Wally Lewis outside Suncorp Stadium.

Jackson also shared a few insights into his life, explaining how his first song bombed on the charts and he was thinking about going out and getting a job.

Then he explained how his second song, Here in the Real World took off, and with a smile on his face and twinkle in his eye, he told us, "I haven't worked since."

Jackson did not have to work hard on Saturday night at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, but he entertained well and we hope it won't be another two decades before he is Down Under again.

As one fan said at the end of the concert, "That was awesome."

Yes, it was.

What an amazing man, so humble. We had tickets to both Sydney and CMC rocks the Hunter. If I could have seen him again I would have. My husband and children thoroughly enjoyed every moment of both concerts. We hope that he comes back to our wonderful country. We will be getting tickets again.

What a fantastic night. I'm 52 but screamed just as loud as the younger girls. My friends thought I would end up with a sore throat. I would dearly love to know where I can buy one of your hats from? Cannot wait for you to come back down under Alan. Please don't wait another 20 years. Brisbane fans love you.

Singin the Blues! - 2011-04-14

I was really annoyed that he did not  make it to West Australia, I have been a fan for over 20 years and never heard any advertising about the other concerts until I read it on the website. Would have made it to Brisbane but was too late. Hope he returns and comes west or has more media exposure before the concert dates. Still Love Ya!

Just Awesome - 2011-04-14

My partner and I traveled from New Zealand to see Alan Jackson live in Brisbane. I have always loved this amazing mans singing and the words of his country songs. In fact I own 13 of his CDs plus 2 DVDs. You might say I am a very big Alan Jackson fan. He did not disappoint me. It was the greatest show I have ever been to. The night was absolutely electric. Obviously he has thousands of fans like me because the audience was with him all the way. Oh how I wish he would come to New Zealand. I know our people would welcome him as much as Australia did. However if he does not get here and he schedules another Australian tour I'll be there again.

thank you - 2011-04-14

My family traveled to Brisbane to see Alan Jackson in concert - we would not have missed it for the world. My late husband always said if 'Alan Jackson ever came to Australia - we would have to go and see him'. Sadly tho my husband passed away in Oct 2009 but me and the kids were there and were so overwhelmed when 'Pop a Top' and 'Its 5 o'clock Somewhere' were sung. These were my husband's favorite songs which we played at his funeral service. thank you for coming to Australia - it was awesome to see you in concert.

You are Great! - 2011-04-07

Hi Alan, I am sure the fan club receives millions of letters and mails but I am sure this is the first one from Pakistan. A country many of you may not have heard before. I just want you to know that your music is being listened to in every part of the world. Where I live, nobody knows anything about country music but I am a big fan of yours. Never got a chance to see you though in concert but have seen many live concerts in London including Great Johnny Cash back in 1997 and many others. My dream is to see you singing live in a concert and hope it may come true one day. I was in college back in 1987 when "Here in the real World" was released and from that day on till today, I have not missed any of your albums. Also thanks for entertaining millions of people across the world. KEEP IT COUNTRY.

Thursday Night Concert Brissie Australia - 2011-03-21
Mr Alan Jackson it may have taken you 20years to come down under and share your voice with us Queenslanders but from a fans perspective YOU WERE WORTH THE WAIT! I was at your opening concert in Brissie with my best friend and her 2 girls and we rocked bopped and squealed like teenagers again, I had a wonderful night and I thank you for bringing your magic to us! The highlight of the night came when you sang Little Bitty, I had to call my 4 year old grandson at home who thinks you are the BOMB so he could listen to you sing his favorite song live! He awoke the next morning next to me his little face so bright and said OMG Grandma Alan Jackson was so LOUD!! But he was awesome, so on behalf of Zack and myself thank you so much for bringing sunshine and cheer to our lives. Love to you from Kerrie Lowood Qld. Au. xoxoxo

Brisbane show 12th March - 2011-03-21

My wife and I traveled up from Melbourne, 1,500 miles away as we couldn't get fix for our local show. The crowd were fantastic as they sang and danced to every song. Alan was very humble in his praise for our country so we hope you come back soon! Let's also hope that others follow his lead. I am sure he will be telling other stars of how appreciative Aussie crowds are. Well done and thank you for coming down under
